Beware Counterfeit Bicycle Parts

With the supply of bicycle parts continuing to frustrate mechanics and riders, we’ve seen a significant increase in counterfeit parts.

As an example, in the picture above the chain on the left is a genuine Shimano Dura-Ace HG901 which retails for over $50, while on the one on the right was one of many we found on eBay from US sellers priced under $30. If that seems too good to be true, it is – While the packaging is similar, the chain inside is a cheap knockoff chain.

While you may still be tempted to give it a try, the chain pictured is wider than a Shimano 11 speed and has large visible gaps between the outer and inner links. The pins push out with almost no effort and the quick link barely connects. When put to the test we found the shifting was terrible and the sloppy loose pins will certainly snap under pressure.

With parts like 11-speed chains being in short supply, the market will continue to be flooded with counterfeits. The best way to ensure you get the real thing is to buy your parts from your local bicycle shop or other trusted retailer.
