Wearing a bicycle helmet is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself from traumatic brain injury, but there are a few ways to ensure the helmet you are wearing does its job properly.
Make sure it fits “just right”
A well-fitted helmet will cover your head, cupping the back of the head and landing just above the ears. If your helmet perches on top of your head, it is likely too small and you may require a sized helmet (vs one size fits most).
Cover your forehead
A common mistake wearing a helmet tilted towards the back of the head – but remember our goal is to protect your noggin from impact, it’s important to make sure your helmet sits level just above your eyebrows, covering one of the areas most likely to make contact during a crash.
Adjust the straps
To ensure the helmet stays on your head, make sure the straps are properly adjusted – not too tight and not too loose. The straps should create a “v” around the ears, connecting under the chin with room for a couple of fingers.
Give it a shake
Does the helmet stay in place when you give your head a shake and nod? If not, use the helmet’s adjustment settings (available on most newer helmets) to customize the fit.
Check for cracks and wear
How often should you replace your helmet? According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, you should replace your helmet every 5 to 10 years, or whenever a rider has been involved in a crash. To ensure maximum safety, check your helmet regularly for cracks or wear which could reduce the helmet’s effectiveness.
