A Custom Built Commuter

Kristin’s commute route from Ashland to Sherborn is the definition of mixed terrain, with parts of it following the Bay Circuit Trail & Greenway.

While she could certainly have tackled the commute on her mountain or gravel bike, she asked for a dedicated bike designed for her commute. In addition to being able to build her something using extra parts from around the Shop, it was a great opportunity to install a 1×8 Microshift Advent drivetrain. The simple and inexpensive system is utilized on a growing number of repair bikes we see here at the Shop, and we wanted to test it for functionality and durability.

Built on a Surly Bridge Club frameset, Kristin’s bike features tan wall Maxxis Rekon Race tires that had been swapped off a new bike build. A Topeak rack that had been in the parts bin for years holds bags Kristin has owned and used for past commutes. New Planet Bike cork grips and a brown Charge saddle complete the retro look of the bike she dubbed “Houlihan.”
