Despite the Halloween festivities of the previous evening, several members of the Steve the Bike Guy Cyclocross Team and Club were up early on November 1st to race on the second day of the Festival of Cyclocross in Plymouth.

Pulling the short straw on the earliest race of the day was our daughter, Sophie, who was riding in the Junior 9-14 category. Untroubled by most of technical aspects of the race, she faced some challenges including untied sneakers and a hard crash on pavement at the end of the first lap. We were really proud how she persevered, finishing 7th of 11 riders, 2nd among the girls.

While Sophie rode, Steve prepared for the Men’s Cat 4/5 race. As the wind picked up and the clouds rolled in, Steve and several of our friends completed six laps. Starting off strong, Steve finished 8th out of 88 racers.

Then it was time for the women. Having raced in Plymouth the year before, Alex assured me this would be “my” course, and with it’s mix of technical, climbing, run ups and flats, I have to agree! While I rode strong, due to a few spectacular crashes, I ended up lapped by the lead rider 8 seconds before hitting the line. Despite this minor disappointment, I came in 9th (my second top ten this season!), finishing behind (and one lap less than) my teammate.

Finally, our teammate Jason hit the course at the end of the day, racing Men Master 45+. Unfortunately, Steve and I couldn’t stay to watch is race, but Alex kept us in the loop on his race via text as we drove home.

After a great day, we’re certain to be back in Plymouth next year!
