The first day of fall and a school holiday combined to create the perfect opportunity for my daughter and I to pack up the bikes and head up to Lancaster for High Tea with Helen and The Midnight Ride of Cyclocross, both organized by Bikeway Source / Bell Lap Racing. Joining us on our adventure was my friend and teammate Alex Carleton and her daughter.

While Alex and I worked on cyclocross skills under the watchful eyes of 8-time British National Cyclocross Champion Helen Wyman and her husband Stefan, the girls rode around the course again and again (and again). Call it the ultimate pre-ride!

After the clinic was over, it was time to turn our attention to The Midnight Ride – lining up with my teammate at the start, as one who is committed to being “Cat 4 four life” my goals were to practice what I had learned that day, check my fitness and avoid running into anything.

Alex and I stayed together for the entire race, offering each other encouragement, crashing into a few things, and  finishing with smiles on our face. Pulling up at the end I was greeted by Helen, who having just won the race, took the time to ask how I did and if I used anything from the clinic (I did – particularly pedaling through, and looking beyond, the turns).

It was a great night, at a great venue with the great people of New England cyclocross. I’m looking forward to returning to the venue for the Minuteman Road Club CX in October.
